Cars make plenty of normal sounds, but a new, persistent or worsening noise is often your vehicle’s way of asking for attention. From squealing brakes to clunking suspension, identifying when and where a noise occurs can help point to the cause. At Adelaide Hills Mechanical & Tyre Service, we diagnose and repair car noises for drivers in Bridgewater and across the Adelaide Hills. With winding roads, steep gradients and changing conditions, it is particularly important to have unfamiliar noises checked before they become a larger repair or affect your safety. Squealing or Screeching Brakes A high-pitched squeal when applying the brakes can be caused by worn brake pads, brake dust, glazed brake components or a small stone caught near the disc. Some brake pads include a wear indicator designed to make a noise when the material is running low. If the noise is constant, becomes louder when braking, or is accompanied by reduced braking performance, book a brake inspection promptly. Leaving worn brake pads too long can damage the brake discs and increase repair costs. Grinding When Braking A grinding or harsh metal-on-metal sound when you press the brake pedal should never be ignored. It can indicate that the brake pad material has worn away and the backing plate is contacting the brake disc. This is a safety concern and may lead to more extensive brake repairs. Avoid unnecessary driving and arrange an inspection as soon as possible. Clunking Over Bumps or When Turning Clunking, knocking or rattling from underneath the vehicle can be linked to worn suspension components, loose sway-bar links, shock absorbers, bushes, steering parts or engine mounts. The Adelaide Hills’ uneven roads and corners can place added demands on steering and suspension. If your car also feels unstable, pulls to one side, vibrates through the steering wheel or handles differently than usual, have it assessed by a qualified mechanic. Clicking When Turning A repetitive clicking sound, particularly when turning at low speed, is often associated with a worn CV joint. CV joints transfer power to the wheels while allowing them to turn and move with the suspension. A damaged CV boot can allow grease to escape and dirt to enter, accelerating wear. Catching the problem early may help prevent further damage. Humming, Roaring or Growling While Driving A humming, droning or growling sound that increases with road speed may come from worn wheel bearings or uneven tyre wear. Tyres can also make extra noise when pressures are incorrect or wheel alignment is out. These noises can be easy to overlook because they often build gradually. A tyre, wheel alignment and suspension inspection can identify the source and help restore a quieter, smoother drive. Squealing From Under the Bonnet A squealing noise when starting the car, accelerating or running the air conditioning may be caused by a worn or loose drive belt. Belts operate important systems such as the alternator, water pump and air conditioning compressor. If a belt slips or fails, it can leave you without charging, cooling or other essential functions. A quick inspection can determine whether the belt, tensioner or pulley needs attention. Ticking or Tapping From the Engine A ticking sound from the engine can have several causes, including low or deteriorated engine oil, valve-train concerns, exhaust leaks or fuel injector operation. While some light ticking may be normal on certain vehicles, a new or louder noise should be investigated. Check your oil level only when it is safe to do so and follow your vehicle manufacturer’s instructions. If an engine noise is accompanied by an oil warning light, overheating, rough running or loss of power, stop driving and seek professional advice. Rattling at Idle or During Acceleration A rattle may be caused by something relatively simple, such as a loose heat shield, exhaust bracket or item in the boot. However, it may also point to an exhaust issue, worn engine mount or internal component requiring diagnosis. Try to note whether the rattle occurs when the vehicle is cold, at a particular engine speed, while accelerating or only over bumps. This information can help your mechanic narrow down the cause. Whining or Whirring Noises Whining noises can come from several areas, including the transmission, differential, power steering system, wheel bearings or a belt-driven accessory. The sound may change depending on vehicle speed, engine speed or steering input. Because these noises can relate to important driveline and steering components, it is best to book an inspection rather than waiting for the problem to worsen. When Should You Book a Car Noise Inspection? Book your vehicle in if the noise is new, getting louder, affecting the way the car drives or occurring alongside warning lights, vibrations, leaks, braking changes or steering concerns. Taking note of when the sound happens—such as during braking, turning, starting or travelling at speed—can make diagnosis more efficient. New Car Service in Bridgewater

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Adelaide Hills Mechanical & Tyre Service in Bridgewater , we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Adelaide Hills Mechanical & Tyre Service, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Adelaide Hills Mechanical & Tyre Service for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.
